"It requires any higher education institution in the state, whether public or private, to develop and enforce a policy that prohibits its students, staff, and faculty from committing copyright infringement. It also requires schools to make "reasonable" attempts to prevent copyright infringement on their networks if they receive 50 or more infringement notices during a preceding year, but it does not explicitly define what those steps are. " Tennessee officials involved with overseeing the state s colleges say that they were careful to review the bill to make sure that it was more amenable to colleges than the version originally drafted for consideration. Of course, their primary concern was money; it s expensive to monitor the piracy activities of an entire campus. RIAA claims that pushing for state laws is a last resort as they would rather work directly with colleges but a similar bill is being considered by the state of Illinois and it appears that discussions have taken place in California about the issue.read comment(s) |
